Jing Ying

Wong 2005 Tournament

Sunday, July 3, 2005  at Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill. Sponsored by Sifu Raymond Wong and the Wong Chinese Boxing Association.

We had fun at the tournament and Jing Ying performed very well, bringing home lots of medals. The day started off with sparring. We had Tim Cherry,  Billy, Glen and Lane Greer, Jose Vega, Randy and Brandon Cassidy, and Lance Rygg competing. Billy had an automatic first place as there were no other competitors in his division, but he wanted to get some matches, so he moved up to the advanced division. He ended up finishing second against an instructor from another school. Lane Greer picked up her first of many "platinum" medals for first place in her division. At this tournament, first place medals were platinum while second place medals were gold.

After sparring, the official opening ceremonies started with a Lion dance. The Wong Lion dancers put on a fantastic performance that was followed by speeches and the introduction of the schools represented in the tournament.

After the opening ceremonies, Jing Ying students got busy. In empty hand forms, Billy and Lane Greer earned platinum medals with Shaolin Fist. In his first tournament competition ever, Glen Greer got a 4th place medal with Shaolin Fist. Jose Vega finished 5th with Dragon Fist.

In Taiji competition, Shifu earned platinum with his Xinjia form, while Lane Greer also earned platinum with her 18 step Essence form. In Taiji wepons, Lane earned platinum with her straight sword form and Shifu earned gold with his double broadswords.

In weapons, Shifu earned platinum medals with his spear form, with his broadsword form, and with his straight sword form. Lane Greer added another platinum with  her long staff performance, Christina Vega took second with her fan form, Jose Vega took third with his long staff form, and Tony Vega took fifth with his short staff form.

In the two man set competition, Billy and Lane Greer performed Tu Ji. It started off as one of their best performances, but a mistake right at the end cost them some points. As they bowed to the judges, they could see a few of them smiling with headshakes that said "you had it nailed right up to the very end . . ."  After the other competitors finished and all the scores were tallied up, Billy and Lane were pleasantly surprised to learn they had tied for first place and earned platinum medals again!
