Chinese New Year 2014

For 2014, the Lunar New Year begins on Friday, January 31 and the celebration traditionally lasts for 15 days. The Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & tai Chi will be hosting our annual celebration to help usher in the Year of the Horse. Because we have so many wonderful activities, we've decided to offer them over the course of the month to allow more people to attend.

Cleaning Celebration from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Bring your favorite brooms, dustpans, vacuums, and other cleaning supplies and help us clean our Jing Ying “home” in preparation for the Chinese New Year!

It's traditional to clean before the new year starts to make room for incoming good luck. It's also a last chance to clean because during the 2 weeks of the new year celebration, brooms and dust pans are stashed away so that the newly arrived good luck isn't accidentally swept away.

We will dust Jing Ying from top to bottom, make the trophies shiny, the floors spotless, and the sinks gleaming. We will hang up New Year decorations.

Each year, we hide the animal zodiac for someone to find while cleaning. This year it will be a horse (not a real one, of course!) So be sure to clean thoroughly!

Free Tai Chi Workshop and Booksigning with Master C.P. Ong from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Join us for a very special workshop with Tai Chi Master C.P. Ong! There will be a discussion about the health benefits of tai chi and then you will have the opportunity to practice basic tai chi moves. You have the option of staying seated for all or part of the workshop (we encourage you to stay within your comfort zone). This workshop is suitable for all levels of fitness. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to talk to Master Ong and have him sign a copy of his new book, Taijiquan: Cultivating Inner Strength.

The Jing Ying Institute has greatly benefited from the work Master Ong has done to arrange tai chi workshops in our area. He has been a pioneer in the USA for Chen style taiji and has spent countless hours training with top grandmasters. The time spent training and traveling to workshops with these grandmasters, where he often served as their translator, allowed him to develop personal relationships that gave him unique access to their knowledge.

His years spent translating for the grandmasters has made him very good at making the language and concepts of taiji accessible to Westerners. This comes across in his book which is easy to read and clearly presents even the most complex concepts. Often analogies to sports more familiar to Westerners are used to explain concepts and photos are used generously.

Master Ong's book builds the foundation and understanding of the principles that will improve all your forms and applications. Along the way, you will learn about the history of taiji both in China and in the US and read interesting stories from the history of the Chen family.

Any student of taiji would benefit from reading this book, but it is a "must-have" book for students of Chen family taiji! You can purchase your copy of the book before the workshop at Jing Ying Institute, at our online store, or on the evening of the workshop.

The Therapeutic Effects of the Human-Horse Relationship from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
Presented by Emma Cruse of The Arion Center.

The Arion Center for Equine Facilitated Human Growth is delighted to offer a workshop in honor of the year of the horse for the Jing Ying institute. Horses have the capacity to read and interpret human emotions, to create authentic relationship, and to provoke change in the way people interact with the world. At this experiential workshop, participants will be invited to learn the role horses can play in fostering mindfulness, connection, and somatic awareness. In keeping with the Chinese mythos of the horse representing never- ending self-improvement, and in honor of this calendar year's element of wood - meaning creativity, nurturance, and growth – The Arion Center invites you to discover how horses help people lead richer more satisfying lives.

Emma Cruse is a life-long student of horses and everything they have to teach. She's studied with some of
the world's most renown teachers of non-coercive horsemanship.

A passionate student of human growth and development, Emma designed her undergraduate degree at Goddard College to explore human psychology and the role horses can play in establishing balance and
self-discovery for their two-legged partners. Emma is a licensed graduate social worker and certified Equine Gestalt Coach. Although the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method™ is not therapy, Emma draws from her experiences as a mental health and substance abuse counselor to enrich and inform her coaching practice.

Since this workshop is at Jing Ying, Emma won't be able to bring any horses with her. She will, however, offer Jing Ying workshop participants a special sign-up for a class at her center in Annapolis where you will be able to interact with the horses (in warmer weather!)

Self-defense Workshop for Women & Teens from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. This will be geared for teens and adults. Learn basic skills for avoiding trouble and protecting yourself. The workshop will start with a discussion on safety to help you avoid trouble. That will be followed with a lesson on escape techniques for situations you weren't able to avoid. Finally, self-defense techniques will be covered for fighting back when you aren't able to escape easily.

During the Lunar New Year, we offer this self-defense workshop at a low cost as a service to our local community. We have listed two prices below from which you can choose to pay. 100% of the proceeds go to a local shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children. We also will accept on their behalf donations of disposable diapers and non-perishable food items.

Here's what one mom had to say:

"My teenage daughter attended one of your self-defense workshops for women, and I believe it helped prevent her abduction. Two men tried to drag her into a truck, and she was able to escape using your techniques."

We're sorry, but this workshop is full. We are happy to schedule a workshop for your group (examples: scouts, moms groups, church groups). There may be a 2-part workshop in March if there is interest, so contact us. We will also hold our annual Self-Defense Workshop for College Students in August.

Women's Self-Defense Workshop
Price: $5*

* Proceeds from the self defense workshop will go to Arden House, Anne Arundel County's only safe-house shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children. Students at Jing Ying have supported Arden House in the past with new kitchen supplies for their renovated kitchen. Click on the above button if you would like to pay $5/person, or click on the button below if you would like to pay $10/person.
